spiritual path: spiritual masters and gurus

Content: Spiritual Masters David Hawkins, Nisargadatta and Papaji / Poonja

In Matthias Pöhm’s German spiritual blog, conventional enlightened ones are judged according to outdated criteria of enlightenment; for details, see Spiritual Masters and Gurus in criticism. In order to illustrate the higher level of consciousness of the new age of Am-Ziel-Erleuchtung© [Final-Enlightenment(AL)], I comment on this criticism of the individual conventional Spiritual Masters and Gurus from the perspective of Am-Ziel-Erleuchtung©. Matthias Pöhm’s criticism of Spiritual Guide David Hawkins

David Hawkins[1] lived from 1927 to 2012. He was an American psychiatrist, spiritual teacher, was ennobled and received a knight of the order of St John. In Korea, he received the honorary title of “Great soul and leading teacher on the path to enlightenment”. David Hawkins experienced his enlightenment through a major health crisis. Since then he has also healed people on a subtle level. His life’s work was his book “The layers of awareness”.

Matthias Pöhm[2] attributes an “I” to David Hawkins as a point of criticism, because he wanted to be addressed as “Sir Dr. Dr.”. Of course, David Hawkins still had an “I”, because this belongs to the transcendent consciousness of all human beings and cannot be given up even through enlightenment. In this respect, the existence of an ego is no objection to enlightenment and/or spiritual mastery.

When David Hawkins insisted on his two doctorates, he was with this honouring the achievement of his inner man (inner family(AL)). I likewise honour my inner man’s achievement of having earned a doctorate in international taxation by expecting to be called “Dr. Ayleen Scheffler-Hadenfeldt” when fully named and “Dr. rer. pol. Ayleen Scheffler-Hadenfeldt” when required by professional law. The assumption that enlightened people humbly have to pile low, because, without an ego, earthly concerns must no longer interest them, is wrong. However, I appear spiritually as Ayleen Lyschamaya, so that in the end my doctorate title is again superfluous.

On the content of David Hawkins’ teaching: the layers of awareness. David Hawkins applied kinesiology to people’s connection to higher reality and developed a scale of consciousness from it. Kinesiology is an alternative medical procedure in which a muscle test on the outstretched arm is used to make a diagnosis by questioning the subconscious. Kinesiology assumes that muscle tension provides feedback on the functional state of the body (see also body psychotherapy). Transferred to spiritual questions, the truth of statements can be checked in this way.

What exactly does David Hawkins measure with his approach? Apparently he received information

  • about the emotional state of people
  • about events in the history of mankind that have actually taken place and are thus contained in the cosmic store of knowledge, and
  • about an energetic hierarchy of consciousness aspects.

That is, David Hawkins received information about the earthly consciousness portion of human beings, the karmic structural layer of humanity (see also Karma) and the energetic transcendental human being.

    1. Earthly part of consciousness

There are no earthly feelings that are closer to the Divine than others. Why should anger at 150 mean a higher level of consciousness than guilt-feelings at 30? In this respect, this range of David Hawkins’ scale of consciousness says absolutely nothing about a person’s level of consciousness.

    2. Karmic structural layer of humanity

People, depending on their personality structure, receive information from their personal or from the general human karmic past. I go into this in my standard book on the new spirituality, “The complete spiritual path“. These directions of perception were not distinguished in David Hawkins’ test subjects. In this respect, David Hawkins’ method has little general validity.

Moreover, kinesiology usually works with yes-no questions. This limits the content, which can be useful for body-related issues. With regard to spiritual questions, however, other methods, such as past life regression techniques or card reading, provide much more comprehensive answers.

    3. Energetic transcendent human being

Simplified, David Hawkins established the following hierarchy: instincts, feelings, mind, love and enlightenment. This roughly corresponds to the subtle energy bodies etheric body, emotional body, mental body and spiritual body. In other words, David Hawkins confirmed the energetic structure of the transcendent human being with his approach (“Spiritual Psychotherapy: the inner family“).

However, since all these energy areas belong to every human being, David Hawkins’ method can only be used to determine what a person primarily identifies with. An individual level of consciousness cannot be deduced from this, because, for example, emotional and intellectual people have nothing more than different developmental tasks. As individuals, the rational people are no more developed than the emotional people.

Viewed as a whole, however, a development from the instincts via the feelings to the mind can be recognised (halftime of evolution). In this respect, David Hawkins is in one point right. Mind is the layer of modern democracies that highly value objectivity and scientific achievement as social norms. According to Hawkins, it is precisely the qualities of the mind that form an obstacle to further development. Higher layers of awareness, such as love and the existence of God, have a suspicious effect on the rational world view and, as subjective levels of experience, elude scientific-objective investigation. The transition from the layer of understanding to the level of love would therefore require a paradigm shift.

In fact, we are right now in this paradigm shift as new age. Am-Ziel-Erleuchtung© means this transition to the love level as a connection from Divine to earthly. However, the paradigm shift does not result from an identification with the divine layer of awareness, as we already know from conventional enlightenment, but from the connection of all parts of consciousness from Divine to earthly.

Spiritual Master Nisargadatta in criticism by Matthias Pöhm

Spiritueller Weg, Spirituelle Meister, Gurus, Erleuchtung -10
Guru Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj

Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj[3] (Maruti Shivrampant Kambli) lived in India from 1897 to 1981. His interest in spirituality awakened in his middle years. He was initiated in the traditional master-disciple lineage and was later himself revered by many Indians and visitors from the western world as an enlightened and spiritual master.

According to his quotations, he taught in particular to develop the neutral observer, which is a divine aspect on the path of knowledge. Otherwise, his insights do not go beyond conventional enlightenment. In this respect, Matthias Pöhm’s[4] criticism of Spiritual Master Nisargadatta is justified: “… He thinks he is the only one, who proclaims “such insights”. A clear misjudgement. This was already wrong in his time (1981). …”

In addition, Matthias Pöhm criticises Nisargadatta for another spiritual error:

guru-nisargadatta

There are as many individual spiritual paths as there are human beings, because the starting situations of their respective transcendental consciousness are different. From there, however, all human beings, as well as the whole of humanity, develop towards the complete and divine-to-earthly consciousness of Am-Ziel-Erleuchtung©. In this respect, there are concrete instructions and procedures for the complete spiritual path. I give an overview in “The complete spiritual path“. The extent to which a person prefers an individual approach based on spiritual techniques or needs a relationship with a guru, depends on his or her soul decision in connection with the initial personality structure.

The value of Nisargadatta’s spiritual mastery was to make people aware of their divine consciousness.

Matthias Pöhm criticises the Spiritual Master Papaji / Poonja

Spiritueller Weg, Spirituelle Meister, Gurus, Erleuchtung -14
Guru Papaji / Poonja

Poonja[5] was an Indian Spiritual Master, who lived from 1910 to 1997. He taught that enlightenment was possible for everyone through sudden realisation and without any effort. In this way, he served the longing of people who, disappointed by the earthly, were looking for lasting peace through enlightenment.

In fact, through a change into the divine part of consciousness as conventional enlightenment, all desires are initially fulfilled. Unless there are particularly one-sided constellations of consciousness, however, such a conventional enlightenment is not stable. But regardless of how stable or unstable the conventional enlightenment is, it is based on a separation from the ego and therefore blocks the universal flow of love into one’s own earthly personality structure.

Matthias Pöhm [6] criticises Poonja as a bad teacher and cites an example from his approach (see also the methods of spiritual path). To what extent Poonja’s instructions were helpful in achieving conventional enlightenment, I would like to leave open, because the actual point of criticism goes deeper. Poonja himself has from the complete consciousness of the transcendent human being only experienced the change out of an unconscious ego into divine awareness. Accordingly, that is all he can guide. ‒ Mind you, this applies to all conventionally enlightened Spiritual Masters and Gurus, who have experienced spontaneous enlightenment without personality development.

Furthermore, Matthias Pöhm criticises Poonja for wanting to change the outer world. He contrasts this with the fact that the outer world does not need to be changed, because it is already perfect exactly as it is. In this case, both statements are true, although they seem to contradict each other. On the one hand, the world is indeed already perfect as it is, because it is a mirror of our consciousness as a learning model for our souls. On the other hand, it is about consciousness development that wants to lead individually and collectively to love, i.e. changes are sought.

This development of consciousness is supported by love healing, but also dynamically (see for example “How dynamic is enlightenment?“) by the male Spiritual System. The latter wants to change the individual as well as the collective consciousness and thus ultimately also the outer world directly; love healing, on the other hand, proceeds more indirectly. For example, it is my task to lovingly and patiently accompany humanity to Am-Ziel-Erleuchtung©. However, every individual can already decide for the higher level of consciousness of the new age. The whole affects the individuals and the individuals affect the whole.

Apart from that, I would like to note that Matthias Pöhm often prefaces his criticisms of the conventional Spiritual Masters and Gurus (so also towards Poonja) with a statement like: “Papaji is an awakened one, whom I hold in high esteem. …” However, it then always remains open, what he appreciates about the conventional Spiritual Masters and Gurus. If Matthias Pöhm would also include the, in his opinion, positive values of the conventional Spiritual Masters and Gurus, it would make his criticism much more balanced.
